Besides the numerous
instruments used in concert, I use a custom- built electronic set-up, designed by Bob
Weigel of Bozeman, MT (see photo on right.) This enables me to control all aspects of the
sound, including the creation of different ensemble sounds. The rack holds most of the
electronics. Included in this rack are a 14-channel Allen & Heath mixer, wireless
transmitter and receiver and a compressor. I use a DPA (Danish Pro Audio) headset
mike and two DPA condenser mikes in a spaced stereo pair on the instruments (see lower
left photo.) These mikes run through two Aphex Tubessence pre-amps, which allows me to
mute them when not in use. At the heart of my ensemble sound, are four Lexicon Jamman
digital samplers. These are synched together with midi time code. A custom built control
system allows me to control the functions on the samplers and mute and un-mute the four
channels in the mike pre-amps (see middle right photo.) Since these samplers are digital,
I am able to record, live, in the concert, and add or subtract as many instruments as I
like, as well as fade different instruments out or the whole piece, like a recording.
These systems are all connected with just three cables employing multi-pin connectors (see
lower right photo.)
