Todd Green, a personable Montanan from Bozeman, performs on the national musical scene and we were priviliged to hear him Monday evening, Jan. 23 in our Fergus Center for the Performing Arts.
His performance was most entertaining with his virtuoso guitar skills, his creative compositions drawing from classical, jazz and ethnic themes.
In this type of presentation, the artist reveals himself, which he did, as a sensitive, perceptive musician of high esteem.
Green draws from his Montana experiences for composing musical vignettes. These visions of the mind can relate to the feelings generated by a crystal clear dawn, the quietude of a sunset, or a shing star in the black velvet night sky. Greens instrument is personal; his music is personal and it is satisfying because of it.
When the title of the piece, such as Dance of the Elements, was played, one could hear the unsung lyrics/theme throughout the composition and never lose the meaning of the original idea for the work.
The Green experience was not limited to classical guitar techniques. The presentation was further validated with the use of interesting drums from various ethnic backgrounds intermingled with the haunting use of a variety of flutes, from modern orchestral flutes to a very ancient ethnic Japanese flute.
Green has also added interest with technical augmentation (of himself) with the use of an on-line loop recording which creates a unique, multi-layered sound. The theme or rythm is introduced and then repeated while the artist plays over the recorded rythms. It clearly created a unique experience.
The evening caused this reviewer to go home with a CD for his own enjoyment! Green is welcome in Lewistown anytime.
